Talking with a friend the other day and how much we missed discussing Jesus. I told her when I am working in the field I am reading, studying, and talking about Jesus about 65% of my day. The other 35% was sleeping, eating, or taking care of my body. Returning to my home country is a culture shock, on many levels. Things flow so differently in the US and people do not talk about Jesus as much as I do.
Sharing my walk with Jesus
Ever ran a marathon? Half marathon? 5k? I did a half marathon once. I am not sure what got into me but whatever it was, it is gone now. I have no more urges to run marathons. I do remember the training, walking and running around The Academy day after day. The path is a gravel and dirt combination in some spots and my shoes and socks would be coated with a fine layer of dirt at the end. It’s about 3.5 miles each lap, little hilly, some straight stretches and a nice view of the Sandia mountains. I would go there three times a week to walk and run around that big square.
During these times I would go over my to do list in my head and lament the things I didn’t get done yet again, think about the landscape and it’s origins, the beauty of the mountains, that thing that happened at work yesterday, and I would talk with God. About upcoming things, what do I do about this problem or that opportunity. I would ask to be used by Him to advance His Kingdom. And He always say yes when I ask this.
I talk with Him each morning before doing anything else. I spend time in prayer and then time in the Word. Each day God shows me something new. This is what I share with people. And that is exactly what I did on a hot and humid day in May hobbling the last stretch around the Academy.
I was running, half way through my lap and turning the corner to head north again next to the busiest street, and I fell. My ankle rolled and as I lay staring up at the sky splayed out on the ground I thought, “How am I going to get back to the car? Lord please help me.” But I didn’t lay there and wait. I got up, with as much dignity as one can have after falling on a busy street and began my hobbling back to the car.
I made it a good ways up the trail when a man from behind me said, “Are you ok? Do you need help?”
Answered prayer, right! Multiple ways because not only did he help me all the way back to my car, I was able to share my quiet time with him. This was just the opportunity I had prayed for. This man did not drop down to his knees and praise God and ask to accept Jesus. Instead, he said something like… that’s interesting, I didn’t think Jesus was for me but I may have to check him out again.
God uses all those little moments to speak life and truth into the people around you. And this is my challenge to you today.
Challenge:
Share your quiet time with at least one person each day for one week. You can call a friend, share at lunch, make a video, write it out and post in on your blog, share at the gym, the grocery store, at work, in your own home, or in those moments when you feel like a fool but God says wait, I can use this if you’re willing.
Doesn’t have to be the same person every day and it doesn’t have to be 65% of your day either. God will provide opportunities for you to share if you make the commitment to share about Him each day. Will someone want to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior? I hope so. Maybe. Or maybe you will plant a seed the Holy Spirit will use to move that person one step closer to their decision.
I would love to hear about your experience if you accept this challenge. God will use it to grow you and whoever you are talking with. And you will feel that peace, that joy, that comes with talking about our Savior and what He is doing in your life.
